Acute Cardiac Care Unit (5200)- A Leader in Interventional Cardiology and LVAD Care

Acute Cardiac Care Unit (5200) at Rochester General Hospital is a 26-bed, high-acuity cardiac and telemetry unit specializing in complex cardiac and medical care. This dynamic and fast-paced unit offers nurses the opportunity to develop expertise in interventional cardiology, telemetry, and LVAD management. Nurses working on the 5200 Unit will provide exceptional care for a diverse and high-acuity patient population, expanding their clinical skills in acute cardiac care and medical cardiac procedures.

Key Patient Populations and Procedures:

Nurses on the 5200 Unit will develop specialized clinical skills in managing a diverse and complex patient population, including:

  • Complex Cardiac Patients: Care for patients with multiple co-existing medical conditions requiring specialized cardiac drips, such as amiodarone, cardizem, dobutamine, milrinone, nitroglycerin, lidocaine, and angiomax.

  • Intermediate Care for Cardiac Patients: Manage patients requiring temporary external pacing wires or defibrillators at the bedside for life-saving measures, with unit-based training provided by highly skilled nurses.

  • Chronic Heart Failure Care: Provide compassionate care for patients with chronic heart failure, including Sensivest readings for fluid management.

  • Acute Myocardial Infarctions (MI): Stabilize and transition patients to cardiac rehab when appropriate.

  • Post-Procedure Care for Cath Lab Patients: Care for patients post-device implantation (pacemakers, AICDs, stents), and manage arterial lines or femoral arterial sheaths for continuous blood pressure monitoring. Nurses may also perform pacemaker interrogations.

  • Electrophysiology (EP) Care: Monitor patients recovering from atrial fibrillation or ventricular tachycardia ablations and/or cardioversions with continuous telemetry monitoring.

  • Advanced Valvular and Structural Heart Disease: Provide specialized care for patients post-valve replacements, including surgical site management and recovery.

  • Telemetry and Acute Medical Conditions: Provide close monitoring and intervention for patients with telemetry needs and acute medical conditions, including continuous oxygen monitoring, bair hugger devices for temperature regulation, and chest tube management.

  • LVAD Care: Provide specialized heart failure care for LVAD patients 60 days or more post-implant, supported by trained VAD RNs.

This Unit is a place where highly skilled, resilient, and compassionate professionals work collaboratively in a team-oriented culture.
