Job Title: Medical Technologist - Lead
Department: NWCH Lab Services
Location: Newark Wayne Community Hospital
Hours Per Week: 40
Schedule: Day; 6-2:30, 6:30-3:00 or 930 - 6pm. 12 hour shifts on weekend rotation 6a-6p every third weekend
Sign-On Bonus: up to $15,000
SUMMARY:
As a member of the professional medical team, accurately performs clinical laboratory analyses and examinations by approved department procedures on blood, urine, body fluids and tissues within a published turn-around time using a variety of instruments and methods to assist in physician diagnosis and treatment. They are expected to utilize complex problem solving skills in resolving clinical and instrument problems. They are to ensure the provision of high quality laboratory/diagnostic services to patients and physicians and full compliance with all regulatory standards. May provide weekend/holiday supervisory coverage as needed.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Testing and Analysis
- Performs and documents all testing accurately and within established turnaround times.
- Interprets and correlates clinical test results with patient history and condition to support clinical decisions.
- Communicates critical or stat results and any instrument issues causing delays to appropriate medical personnel.
- Conducts quality control, routine and advanced maintenance, and troubleshooting of instruments.
Laboratory Operations
- Prepares reagents, monitors supply inventory, and ensures cost-effective usage of materials.
- Maintains proficiency in computer systems for ordering, testing, and result reporting.
- Adheres to all regulatory and accreditation standards consistently.
- Performs advanced maintenance, equipment validation, and quality improvement activities as assigned.
Training and Education
- Provides instruction in the School of Medical Technology and assists with laboratory rotations.
- Trains new and current staff on procedures and instrumentation; serves as a technical consultant.
- Coordinates department instructional programs for Clinical Laboratory Technician (CLT) students.
- Develops or updates Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and supports competency assessments.
Leadership and Quality Oversight
- Provides supervisory guidance, assists with problem resolution, and reviews QC and maintenance records.
- Leads or participates in department audits, tracers, and regulatory preparation activities.
- Oversees validations for new procedures and instrumentation; reviews and maintains SOP documentation.
- Participates in staff scheduling, timekeeping (Kronos), and peer interviewing for new hires.
Special Assignments (RRH Labs Only)
- Coordinates functions within the Laboratory Information System (LIS) database.
- Participates in the Laboratory Ambassador Program and system-wide initiatives.
- Conducts research, evaluates new technologies, and provides written reports to leadership.
- Serves as a CAP Inspector and promotes continuing education opportunities for staff.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Certification by American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) preferred, but not required
- BS in Medical Technology or BS in a related Science (Biology, Chemistry, or The Physical Sciences) and/or equivalent relevant experience as recognized by New York State Department of Education for licensure as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist. (NYS Dept of Education, Education Law, Title 8, Article 165, sub-parts 79-15; 9/23/8).
- 4+ years of relevant Medical Technology Laboratory experience required.
- New York State Department of Education License or Limited Permit as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist.
- Must meet New York State Department of Health CLEP requirements as a laboratory supervisor.
- If travel is required, must have a valid NYS driver’s license as defined by the RGHS Motor Vehicle and Authorized Drivers Policy.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Previous experience in a Clinical or Pathology Laboratory a benefit, but not required.
- Previous experience in a laboratory supervisory or leadership position preferred.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: M - Medium Work - Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects; Requires frequent walking, standing or squatting.
PAY RANGE: $41.75 - $47.50
The listed base pay range is a good faith representation of current potential base pay for successful applicants. It may be modified in the future. Pay is determined by factors including experience, clinical licensure date, relevant qualifications, specialty, internal equity, location, and contracts.
