SUMMARY

As part of the staff of RRH @ Unity Hospital the nurse midwife provides antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum, family planning and routine well-women health care. The nurse-midwife utilizes the midwifery process including assessment, treatment, and evaluation to women of childbearing age through menopause, and infants from birth until 12 hours of age. This is an in-patient position with future goals to start an outpatient office for full scope Midwifery care .

DEPARTMENT: Obstetrics and Gynecology

SCHEDULE: Rotating

ATTRIBUTES

  • Ability to function completely in all areas of nurse-midwifery practice; interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient’s requirement, relative to age specific needs; covered by malpractice in all sites of clinical practice
  • One (1) to two (2) years of clinical experience in a related practice preferred, however will consider a highly motivated new graduate
  • Strong analytical, computer and communication skills

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Antepartum Care. Manages the care of essentially normal antepartum women, including teaching, counseling, and support. Takes a health history, performs and records the physical examination, assessing data reflective of the woman’s status, and interprets the appropriate information needed to identify the each woman’s plan of care relative to her age specific needs. Evaluates and review all findings with the client and her family. Functions utilizing established policy for specific medications and treatments for the antepartum period. Physician collaboration if PIH/Preeclampsia and/or diabetes treatment is warranted.
  • Intrapartum Care. Manages the care of women experience an essentially normal labor, including teaching and support. Takes and admission interval history, reviews the antepartum records, and performs and updated physical examination, including the status of lab. Determines eligibility for appropriate birth facility and/or nurse-midwifery management. Assess women in labor at regular intervals to determine progress, and consults or refers to medical management according to established risk criteria.
  • Postpartum Care. Manages the postpartum care of women, based on assessment of emotional and physical status. Reviews with the client the postpartum status and consults or refers to the physician according to established protocols. Functions under protocols for specific medications and treatments. Teaches and counsels women in regard to health issues such as, exercise, nutrition, nursing, parenting, postpartum physical changes, breast self-exam, health maintenance, and family planning.
  • Newborn Care. Institute emergency care for the newborn, including resuscitation and intubation; perform and record complete assessment of newborn in or out of hospital setting
  • GYN. Partakes in ED/Floor consults, post op management and rounding on all C-sections and GYN patients. Evaluates and treats minor gynecological problems according to clinical site policies. Consults and/or refers to the physician according to clinical site policies. Orders lab tests as indicated, according to policies and procedures, as outlined for clinical practice.

EDUCATION BS: Physician Assistant (Required)
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS M - Medium Work - Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects; Requires frequent walking, standing or squatting.
LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS PA-C - Certified Physician Assistant - National Committee on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA); RPA - Registered Physician Assistant - New York State Education Department (NYSED)
