Summary
Works under the direction of the Registered Nurse, providing close observation of patients. Is responsible for direct observation of the patient who is identified to be at risk for harming self/others, if left alone. May perform assistive care, such as, but not limited to, setting up patient’s tray, reading to the patient, ambulating with the patient that ambulates independently. The sitter may assist with personal care as directed by a nurse and if within the training and skills of the sitter.
Key Responsibilities
Positions self in patient room at bedside to maintain constant visual observation of the patient. Never leaves the patient alone or out of sight unless specifically instructed by the nurse.
Must possess good interpersonal skills, patience and the ability to deal with confused, sometimes uncooperative patients, and/or be with patients experiencing depression and/or suicide ideations. Communicates in a professional manner and demonstrates respect for patient, families/significant other and other health care members.
Obtains verbal report from the patient’s nurse to include information regarding the patient’s identified care needs, diagnosis, visual, auditory, or language barriers, as well as any special consideration (NPO, bed alarms, etc.). Obtains instruction from nurse regarding ambulation limitations and course of action for redirection of patient if needed.
Observant of the patient’s activity and behavior and reports any concerns or changes with the patient directly to the licensed nursing staff to achieve positive patient outcomes.
Maintains a safe and clean environment.
Accurately and legibly records data collected.
Required Licensure/Certification Skills
High School Diploma

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Moderate - Clinical - Moderate clinical roles are patient facing roles that require continual movement, including standing, walking, and lifting 20–50 lbs., along with pushing and pulling medical equipment and assisting with patient positioning. Employees perform frequent bending, twisting, and reaching while completing fine motor tasks in busy or confined clinical environments. High sensory acuity is essential for monitoring patient status and responding to alarms or safety concerns. Emotional and cognitive demands are substantial, involving decision-making under pressure, responding to emergencies, and maintaining sustained focus. Environmental exposures include infectious agents, bodily fluids, chemicals, and radiation. TB testing, mask-fit testing, and physical exams are common requirements.
PAY RANGE: $18.46 - $26.24
The listed base pay range is a good faith representation of current potential base pay for successful applicants. It may be modified in the future. Pay is determined by factors including experience, clinical licensure date, relevant qualifications, specialty, internal equity, location, and contracts.
