Job Title: Ophthalmic Tech I

Location: Reed Eye - Pittsford

Department: Optical

Hours Per Week: 40 hours, Full-time, 8-hour shifts

Schedule: Monday-Friday, Day Shift

SUMMARY

Responsible for daily patient care and flow. Position requires a good understanding of ophthalmic practice and patient care, knowledge of medical instrumentation and its proper care and use, and an ability to assess common safety hazards and take precautions to establish a safe work environment. Ability to communicate with patients, co-workers, and supervisor is critical. Must be willing to help in all areas and understand the need for efficient use of time.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist the doctor promptly and professionally in patient care.

  • Manage patient flow.

  • Demonstrates working knowledge of eye anatomy, disease, symptoms, and ocular meds.

  • Obtains a thorough medical, ocular, and social history and chief complaint from the patient.

  • Obtains visual acuity both at distance and near.

  • Obtains or performs ocular motility, pupillary exams, confrontational fields, and neutral-density glasses.

  • Performs basic color vision screening using the Ishihara or Farnsworth D-15 color vision test.

  • Performs specialized visual acuity testing, including a brightness acuity tester (BAT) and a potential acuity meter (PAM).

  • Performs imaging using diagnostic equipment: Fundus photography, external photography, Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), and Optomap Ultra-wide field.

  • Performs diagnostic testing using the following diagnostic equipment: Humphrey Visual Field, Corneal Topography, Lenstar, IOL Master, Specular Microscopy, Pachymetry, and Auto-refractor.

  • Measure the patient’s intraocular pressure using either the Goldman tonometer, Perkins tonometer or Tonopen.

  • Administer eye drops to patients in accordance with provider instructions, utilizing proper eye drop techniques and sterility.

  • Clean, stock, and prepare exam rooms.

  • Maintain, clean, and sterilize ophthalmic instruments.

  • Maintains and cleans all equipment being utilized and reports if not in working condition.

  • Maintains patient confidentiality.

  • Complies with all HIPAA requirements.

  • Performs other duties assigned.

REQUIRED LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION SKILLS:

  • None

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Preferred experience in an ambulatory medical setting but not required.

  • Ability to work in a team environment.

  • Friendly, courteous, and patient service-oriented

  • Certified Ophthalmic Assistant within 24 months of hire preferred.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: M - Medium Work - Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects; Requires frequent walking, standing or squatting.

PAY RANGE: $20.00 - $29.00

The listed base pay range is a good faith representation of current potential base pay for successful applicants. It may be modified in the future. Pay is determined by factors including experience, clinical licensure date, relevant qualifications, specialty, internal equity, location, and contracts.
