SUMMARY:

The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) provides immediate medical care and transport of patients during emergencies, playing a critical role in stabilizing and ensuring safe transport to medical facilities.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responds to emergency calls, assess patients’ conditions, and determine appropriate medical interventions, coordinating with dispatch as necessary.

  • Safely transport patients to medical facilities, monitoring their condition and providing necessary care during transit.

  • Administer CPR, control bleeding, manage airways, and provide other life-saving measures to stabilize patients.

  • Utilize essential medical equipment such as, but not limited to, defibrillators, oxygen delivery systems.

  • Work closely with paramedics, firefighters, law enforcement, and hospital staff to ensure coordinated patient care reporting nature of injury as indicated.

  • Maintain accurate and detailed patient care reports, documenting assessments, treatments, and patient responses.

  • Ensure the cleanliness and readiness of emergency vehicles and medical equipment.

  • Interpret oral, written and diagnostic form instructions, including calculating weight and volume ratios.

  • Lift and move patients, often in challenging environments, such as extreme terrain or temperatures.

  • Participate in continuous education to stay current with medical protocols and enhance skills.

  • Ability to maintaining composure and professionalism in high-pressure situations.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements (Expanded):

  • Work in a variety of uncontrolled and potentially hazardous environments (indoor/outdoor, inclement weather, confined spaces).

  • Maintain physical readiness to assist in lifting/moving patients using stretchers (up to 250 lbs with partner assist), medical equipment, and gear.

  • Walk, kneel, crawl, and climb over uneven terrain or in emergency conditions.

  • Transport essential medical equipment (e.g., EKG monitor, ALS/med bags) without assistance.

  • Remain calm and focused in high-stress, emotionally charged situations.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • BLS required at hire, If not AHA, must obtain AHA BLS within 3 months of hire

  • Valid NYS Basic EMT

  • Valid Drivers License

  • Heavy Work - Exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Requires constant walking, standing or squatting

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Emergency Vehicle Operator Course (EVOC) or equivalent

  • Strong knowledge of medical procedures and emergency care techniques

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Drive - Clinical - Roles in this category require frequent driving combined with mobile clinical care across settings such as emergency response, mobile clinics, and home health environments. Staff must repeatedly enter and exit vehicles, occasionally lift and carry equipment weighing up to 100 lbs. or more, and perform care within patients’ homes or other confined, unpredictable, or uncontrolled environments. These positions demand strong fine and gross motor control, firm grasping, and heightened visual and auditory awareness to ensure safe and effective care delivery. Emotional and cognitive demands are substantial due to rapid decision‑making, direct exposure to critical or sensitive situations, and independently managing patient care in the field or home setting. Environmental exposures may include traffic hazards, infectious agents, extreme temperatures, variable home conditions, and hazardous materials. Valid licensure, physical readiness, and flexibility for extended or on‑call schedules are typically required.

PAY RANGE: $20.00 - $25.50

The listed base pay range is a good faith representation of current potential base pay for successful applicants. It may be modified in the future. Pay is determined by factors including experience, clinical licensure date, relevant qualifications, specialty, internal equity, location, and contracts.
